First "Real" Water Fast

Water Fasting Discussion. Water fasting is the road-less-traveled in weight loss. It is very challenging because it places us face-to-face with our human weaknesses. Just a 24-hour water fast can bring up all type of emotions from the soul, not to mention sharp hunger pains incited by the process of detoxification. This forum is dedicated to all the fasting warriors who are taking the battle to the line and have or will be entering these uncharted fasting waters in their minds and bodies. May together we accomplish all of our goals, and may freedom rule in every aspect of our lives!! Welcome and God Bless!

First "Real" Water Fast

New postby HeavenlyHell » Thu Mar 18, 2010 11:24 am

So over the years I have attempted and sometimes succeeded at 1-5 days and one time last year one 10 day fast. However I was still consuming caffeine/alcohol/etc. I know this is really BAD and probably definitely defeated the purpose of the fast!

So right here right now I am on 2 two of a true, pure water fast. I think I'm doing ok! I recognize that I need more rest and feel a little woozy/groggy upon waking up but once I get going and hydrating I'm fine! I also practice hot yoga every night. That should be ok, right? I definitely drink plenty water. Lots of emotional stuff has come up already - just thoughts basically - but I observe them and let them pass - just as I learn in yoga :)

My main question is - when you guys do these fasts and plan them - how do you get out of eating when you have insistent lunch invitations and/or people just shoving food in your face. I'm very familiar with the "no thanks" method or "I ate already" but what if someone just won't back off? Any tips/tricks?

I plan on going for 10 days and should have no obstacles. I have food alibi for every day for the most part. I know I'm medically a healthy weight for my height/age/frame but would like to shed some excess water weight. I'm positive I have toxins trapped in my fat cells as I've been consuming them for over ten years! I'm about 5'6"1/2-3/4 - 132 pounds - 29 - turning 30 in May. I have already lost 2 pounds in one day btw!

All advice, insight and thought is welcome! I think I will definitely do some blogging here. I know it's hard to tell anyone you're doing this because they will think you're crazy and try to intervene, commit you and/or force feed you - esp if you're not overweight!

It's exactly what it sounds like. Sort of like Bikram but with a twist and a lot more love. Here's a copy and paste of the description from my yoga studio :)

Allow our experienced teachers to skillfully guide on your yogic path through this anaerobic sequence of asanas (postures) and pranayama (breathing exercises) practiced in a heated room, reaching up to 105 degrees. The benefits of the heated room are twofold: not only is your body more flexible due to the external heat (thereby less chance of injury), but you are also detoxifying your organs, including the largest organ of your body – your skin!!!! This practice will not only increase your energy, stamina and flexibility, but it will also help eliminate toxins in your system, improve blood circulation and dare we mention . . . calm the mind. This practice will challenge you no matter your level! Start today; develop a regular a regular practice and you will reshift, reshape, renew- mind, body and soul. . .

I've been taking some Mega-T fat burners to keep my metabolism up. Well really b/c I had some left from before and to stay energized. During the work day I feel like I'm going to collapse sometimes! I tried going for a walk and barely made it once around the industrial park rotary (it's not that far 15-20 minute average walk time). I was really really really tempted to go to Starbucks and get an iced soy latte. Would that be totally bad? I didn't do it but still kind of want to. I think my head and heartrate are back to neutral so I can function.

Good luck on the 30 day - holy cow! I feel like I'd never be able to get away with that. I know after 10 days it starts to get euphoric but ppl insist on "feeding" me too much. Probably because I probably sound like I hate food! I don't - I just hate all the bad effects and I'm prone to overdoing it/binging (well maybe not what others would consider a binge but def me). I've also a tendancy to turn to laxatives afterwards. Definitely working on that. I hope to never take them again after completing a waterfast and possibly some other cleanse/detox runs. So actually if we don't count the food I "got rid of" this fast is on day 4 but I suppose it does count hehe...

Im on day 9 of my water fast right now,Ive gone up to 21 days before,my head felt clearer, but sadly no euphoria,I would have to fast longer I think to get that feeling.Im a chronic binger myself ,the person hanging around the snack table at parties like a vulture.I feel ashamed now when I think of my behaviour. To be honest the hot yoga thing sounds like a bad idea for someone water fasting as you will be in a weakened state and rest is needed so your body can focus on detox, which it will do very effectively with water alone,no sweating needed.Meditating while you rest would be better by a mile.Lots of people do short water fasts for detox alone, and are at normal weight, dont worry!Dont bother with the fat burners, water fasting works about a billion times better than BS fatburners and taking them could impede your progress.Beware the laxatives, they promote a lazy bowel, and that can contribute to extra toxins in your system.Hope you do well and complete the fast but remember, rest!Water fasting works much better if you do!! :D

Zaster - thanks for your tips! Yes you are absolutely right! Sadly I had to break the fast today as I just felt weak and light headed and barely able to stand or walk - probably from the fat burners and hot yoga!!! However I plan on restarting tomorrow for a new seven day or Sunday for a five day. I made it three days which is a record for me. Perhaps ten days was too much for me at once! I've done ten days before but was having caffeine and alcohol like I said before :( And yes the laxatives have got to go! I've been doing research and it turns out - they don't really help you lose weight at all. The calories have alreadybeen absorbed - they just move the matter out of the bowels. Weak! That's probably why I was keeping the weight on - because I'd binge and eat whatever the hell I wanted thinking I was "getting rid of it" Now that I ate I might take them just to get things moving before I begin my next fast along with the fat burners or maybe I should just throw them out! I only have a few of each left! I work long hard hours and it's very very challenging to sustain myself on water alone. I got down to 129 today - I wonder if and how much I gained back from just the small portions of healthy food I had today: steamed bean curd w/ mixed vegetables, brown rice, drizzle of garlic or brown sauce (I know - BAD) and I few bites of a tostada salad with no sour cream - unfortunately some sprinkled cheese because I forgot to ask for it without, I normally follow the vegan diet. I tried to eat around/pick out the the cheese and there was salsa, cucumbers, lettuce obviously and tomatoe I guess oh and jalepenos and a teeny bit of guacomole. Unfortunately I also ate the shell - my carb weakness came into effect once it was "there" ugh. I also had 5 saltine crackers w/ a tiny bit of peanut butter. I'm now on my second homemade rice milk latte. I used regular X-Bold Starbucks grinds for the espresso. Not bad. But ok - what I ate was not THAT healthy but better than bagels and french fries and pasta right?
Once in Ketosis for arguments sake - what are everyone's thoughts on say a soy latte from Starbucks - would that kick me off? I was craving one very badly on day 2 but resisted. I'm still pretty proud I made it 3 full days with water only. I probably just shouldn't've done the hot yoga and/or the fat burners. I literally thought I was going to vomit while driving home today. Not a pleasant thought. Although I've abused laxatives - I've NEVER forced myself to throw up. Weird, right?
Come to think of it I could never give up hot yoga for a week BUT I could stick to just two or three times and switch to dry/cool vinyasa classes for the other two or three. Yes I do it THAT much. Eventually I should probably start alternating in some cardio and maybe pilates too but the gym is just so gross after practicing at such an amazing studio. I tried walking around the industrial park I work in during the fast and day 1 was no prob - 3 laps - day 2 I could barely make it 1 and day 3 I compromised at 2.
